Tristan Arts is a software company dedicated to helping musicians, music students and music lovers excel in their understanding of fundamental musical concepts and content. We also strive to provide excellent software at prices students can afford.

Our current products include Multimedia Orchestration and Instrumentation and Tristan Musical Instruments. Both programs highlight the instruments of the Western Orchestra, and provide information on sound construction, auxiliary instruments, historical background and the common, traditional uses of the instruments in an orchestral context. The heart of both programs provides demonstrations of the orchestral instruments by professional perfomers. The major melodic instruments include violin, viola, cello, doublebass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba. Percussion instruments include timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, tam tam (or gong), and triangle. The programs also contain orchestral excerpts to highlight music of the eras such as Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern. Our interactive software are the primary means for delivering our content to students.

We take advantage of the breakthroughs provided by multimedia and interactive technology, so students can learn visually by seeing the actual notion scroll underneath the video clips, by hearing the correct musical interpretation, and actually seeing the performer achieve the music on his or her instrument. We think the interaction of these different elements creates a complete learning experience that doesn't discriminate against slower or faster learners, or audio learners from visual learners; all students can gain from our presentation of the orchestral instruments that integrates video images of performers, the audio of the music, integrated with the exact written notation. Non-musicians can enjoy seeing the music scrolling as the piece is performed even if they don't read notation. At the same time, seasoned musicians gain greater understanding of how to achieve on a professional level by seeing the exact notation achieved and interpreted by a professional performer. Composers and orchestrators particularly can benefit from exploring and comparing and contrasting a wide-variety of clips that highlight specific features of the instruments, that only a performer would know.

Tristan Arts also believes that historical and cultural contexts are essential for understanding music. So in our presentations of the instruments and music we explore other arts, as well as the cultural, political and economic realities of musical periods. We also contend that students will be captivated and learn faster by learning the stories that bring the instruments and music to life. Music, is first and foremost, an art form, so we also emphasize the aesthetic experience conveyed by the different instruments and how the master composers use the instruments to achieve their artistic visions.
